AUTISM KIDS EARLY INTERVENTION

Autism Kids Early Intervention is founded by teacher Chia in 2019. It is set up with the aim of providing 1 to 1 therapy for children with special needs.

For every child who comes under my care, I will ensure that he or she will receive a tailored program that is suitable for his level. The child will improve on his capacity to communicate with others, learn how to be independent in his daily activities and develop meaningful social connections.

Education is a life-long journey. In the process of giving therapy to the child, teachers and parents would also improve in their techniques and character. A child with behavioral issues will teach a caregiver how to be patient, to be creative and understanding. A child with speech issues will teach caregivers how to use alternative ways to communicate. As caregivers, we gain insights and learn new things in the process of helping the child improve.

“Some see the disabilities, but special education teachers see the possibilities” – Breezy Special Ed

As a therapist, I want the best for my clients. It is about looking beyond the diagnosis, behavioral issues and learning disabilities. It is about looking at the potential in the child and believing that the child will be able to do it. Through my therapy, I want the child to fulfill his greatest potential. No matter what level the child is in, I always want to bring him to a higher notch. It is also about maximizing the child’s growth, especially in the areas he or she is talented in.

“If a child can’t teach the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn” – Ignacio Estrada

There is no one-size-fits-all approach in therapy. Each child is special and have unique strengths. Throughout therapy, it is important for us have continuous assessment and be flexible in our approach. The methods that I use are flexible and will adapt to the pace of the child. I will adapt my teaching style according to the child’s needs.

Although the company is named as “Autism Kids Early Intervention”, my sessions are not limited to children with ASD. I specialize in giving therapy to children from 2 to 6 years old, with issues ranging from speech and language delays, global developmental delay and down syndrome.

I also specialize in giving tuition for children in mainstream schools or in Pathlight school. These programmes are generally academic in nature to help the child keep up with work in the mainstream setting.

Core principles of my teaching:

Fun – Sessions should be fun and engaging for the children. Hence, it is not limited to table work or doing worksheets. I incorporate playing and break times during sessions. These act as rewards to reinforce good behaviour. At the same time, facilitated play also helps a child in his creativity, problem solving, social skills and his speech/language.

Achievement-oriented – Results are important for my therapy. I tailor make a program for each of my children based on their learning needs. Adaptations and assessment will be made continuously to ensure the child has progress. Data will also be recorded for each session to track the child’s progress.

Integrity – Integrity is one of the most important attributes for an individual. What more as a therapist for a child with special needs? To me, I ensure that each session is carried out with integrity. I ensure the quality of my sessions by producing quality materials and by using up-to-date techniques. Parents are welcomed to sit in to take a look at how I conduct the sessions.

Teamwork – I work closely with the parents. Teaching a child with special needs require us to work as a team. If everyone is on the same page, the child will show tremendous progress, especially in terms of his behaviour, work habits and communication. I invest time in training the parents through my video demonstration of how to teach certain skills. I also provide free consultation for my clients through the phone.

Humility – There are many ABA therapists, early intervention teachers and therapists in this field. Many of us employ different approaches and have unique styles in teaching. There is no 1 technique that will be the best or 1 therapist who is better than the rest. The key is really to find the one who suits your child the best. As a young therapist, there is always room to improve and things to learn. As such, I attend courses and seminars to constantly upgrade my skills. I talk to the community of professionals to get advice and exchange ideas to improve my therapy skills.
